We love sapphires for their versatility, durability (they have a Mohs Hardness rating of 9) and because they come in myriad colors and color combinations. In fact, sapphires are “allochromatic” meaning they come in every color of the rainbow (red ones are called Rubies)! Our Tanzanian Umba Valley sapphires often have a unique characteristic called “epigenetic staining” or orange inclusions that are a direct result of the glorious iron-rich earth they can be found in. It’s like a “birthmark” they carry and we think it makes them even more special.
This captivating orangy pink stone’s color is called “Padparascha” which means “lotus flower” in Sinhalese, a language spoken in Sri Lanka. This particular color is rare, and these stones can sometimes draw higher prices than even the finest blue sapphires!
Sapphire is the birthstone for September.
When you shop with ANZA Gems, you're making a difference and giving back to East African mining communities. ANZA supports artisans at every level, beginning with purchasing directly in-country in Tanzania and Kenya, then using US and Kenyan artisanal cutters–a number of them women–to facet the gems into one-of-a by-kind creations. At least 10% of your purchase will directly benefit education, vocational training, community development and other initiatives supporting miners where they need it most through the nonprofit Gem Legacy.
